“How do I get sponsored?”
Posted in: Blog
Will:
Thought this was apropos to your topic.
When someone asked Danny Carey the drummer of the band Tool how they could get signed, his response:
"If you are playing music to get signed, please do me, yourself, and the whole world a favor and quit right now. The last thing this world needs is more shit to filter through when we are looking for sincerity and inspiration in art forms."
In my long history of working with many sponsored skiers and cyclists I've met two distinct types:
The hard working, humble person who realizes it's a job and helps promote and develop product along with being a good ambassador for the sport as well. You are a great example of this with your ice conditions page.
The others have the most bizarre sense of entitlement I have ever witnessed and do nothing good for the sport or the companies that sponsor them.
My 2 cents.
Looking forward to your gear write up as I need to figure out something for gloves now that I've finally ditched the leashes.

Hi Will,
I listened to everything with my words to speak software. Were do I fall?
Take care,
REM
Ivan: Yes, and thank you. I'm no shining example but I try.
Remy: Hopefully don't fall! Where do you want to fit in? Stoked for the weekend effort.
Don't forget the option of working in the industry first… climbing guide, salesposition, ranger… get yourself closer to the sport, fully immersed and see if it is truly your passion. If it is someone will see it and hopefully act and give you ideas for that next step.

Wise words Will. You are like a miniature Buddha.

I have been volunteering as a climbing instructor and trip leader for a NW mountaineering club for about 5 years, and am now trying to break into the world of professional guiding and/or instruction. My "job" during those years was just a means to an end – something that allowed me, financed me, to go out and climb. Hopefully soon I will be able to make some semblance of a living doing something I love – climbing and teaching climbing to others.
Very well written and presented, I used to be on the Australian BMX team and what a lot of work it was!
Hi Will, Good advice and well written. Interesting stuff. I was sponsored in a small way in the past by Hewlett Packard as they wanted some testing done on their gear. None of it was as 'extreme' as your achievements! We just took paramotors into Venezuela and took some film footage and photos which then helped with their marketing. We had fun flying the machines but we also worked hard to try and get good footage and photos taken for HP. We found that, by working hard and pleasing the sponsor and really 'over delivering' then the sponsor is likely to back you on your next idea or adventure. HP have backed us three times in the past. Things have quietened down a little now, since having had two kids, which is an adventure in itself and much harder work than any adventure!!! Tom
Hi Will,
I am writing to you because you are one of my husbands many admirers. I believe he once did a pull up contest with you in Colorado, he talks about it all the time. He is the most amazing person and has unbelievable ice climbing skills, anything with ice or rock he is on. We recently got back from Alaska, and spent lots of time climbing on the glaciers and we summited a few peaks (as many as we can do in 5 months while working i guess.) Anyways, he loves the sport so much, and he is so good at it, he has already taught 4 people in the Vail Valley to climb, with his own extra gear, just so he could have people to go with. Neither of us have a lot of money, nor is that what we are looking for.. I want him to be recognized for the amazing skill he has. I would like to ask you where we can start? Can you help? Please… I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Hey will
What if your faced with the problem of working to pay bills and live pay check to pay check but would like to make a change and start getting into sky diving or racing (iv never been skydiving and the closest iv been to racing is in my car on the way to work) because you like the adventure or the rush you get from the speed?
I'm more than happy to hear your thoughts on what I've written. Please note that all comments will be moderated before publishing. Thank you for joining the conversation.
