Ice climbing is far more mental than rock climbing, and I mean that both in the sense of, “It’s mental mate!” and that ice climbing puts more of a load on the brain. This does not mean ice climbers are smarter than rock climbers obviously… Here are a few brief tricks I’ve found useful for leading ice.

Great post Will! A few weeks back I found myself "summoned" from another climb by the blast of a whistle… with dread that there was a serious accident we hustled to action. What I found upon reaching the scene was my friend 20m above his last screw with a distinct lack of additional screw on his harness, frozen and gripped. His partner (less experienced) had taken the correct action in securing the rope/belay and calling for help knowing we were a short distance up the valley.
After soloing up to him before the others arrived, I found myself giving a lot of the same advice in your post. Long story short, with a couple additional screws and some coaching he finished the lead and now has some of the tools to push through the "mental pump" and plan his leads better.

Interesting post, Will. I was wondering if you've written up anything about your tactics for speed climbing ice. I don't mean transitions or rope strategies–I mean how you climb differently as a second when you're trying to cover a lot of steep ice quickly. I was considering going for the Hydro/Sorcerer linkup this season, and could use some ideas! (I know you've posted on fast transitions and the linkup already.) Thanks!
Brenden–good work, glad that turned out OK!
Eugene–Ya go as fast as you can while seconding on big links. Start the pitch at a pace you can maintain, finish it anaerobically. Go!
What about Plice? What about an exercise ball and CF?
just jealous as i sit in my office, but i am prepared for the cold weather, as my office is really a cold storage area … Nice new Spay ice route – jd
JD: Fill the exercise ball with water. Winch it to the top of the plice. Stand at bottom of the Plice, blindfoled, have a friend release the ball at the same time he yells yells, "Rock!" Excellent training for mountaineering!
Spray Ice fun!
